About Kaltura Media

Kaltura MediaSpace is used as our college media server and is part of the Chemeketa Learning Cloud.

Faculty and students can access Kaltura Media from the following locations:

My Media Page

The My Media page is where you can access and manage all your media within Kaltura. From here you can add new media or Manage Media you have uploaded or recorded.

MediaSpace

  1. Access MediaSpace at: video.chemeketa.edu
  2. From the top of the page, click on the My Media link (enter My Chemeketa login when prompted).
  3. Your media will be listed on the My Media page.

eLearn/Blackboard

  1. Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu (enter My Chemeketa login when prompted)
  2. From the top of the page, click on the Faculty tab > click the Media sub-tab > click on Kaltura My Media link below.
  3. Your media will be listed on the My Media page.
Note: see Manage Media for more information on the various media settings available in Kaltura.

Search for Media

Follow these steps to search for media within MediaSpace.

Search Published Media

  1. Search for all published media by entering keywords into the search bar at the top of the page. Search results are limited to media published by the college or from the Channels area within MediaSpace.
  2. Sort your search results by most recent, alphabetical or by comments or by media format (video, audio, etc..).
  3. Filter your search results for keywords within all metadata, video captions, channels or categories.
  4. To clear the search text, click on the X in the search field.

Search My Media

  • Search for your own private media by clicking on the My Media link at the top of the page and entering keywords into the search bar near the page heading.
  • To clear the search text, click on the X in the search field.

Search Behavior

  • Search criteria may include alphanumeric as well as special characters such as: `, ~, !, @, #, $, %, ^, *, (, ), -, _, =, +, [, ], {, }, ;, :, ', \, |, /, ?
  • The following special characters are not searchable: &, <, >. For example, searching for "hello&world" will not yield any results.
  • The character “/” is not searchable and ignored by the system. For example, searching for the date 1/1/2015  searches for the string 112015.
  • The character '+' is treated as the spacebar - and is used as the AND search operand.
  • The spacebar is treated as an AND search operand. For example, searching for ”hello world” will result with all entries that include both hello and world in one of the searchable entry attributes.
  • The comma (,) character is treated as an OR search operand. For example, searching for hello, world will result with all entries that include either hello, or world in one of the searchable entry attributes.
  • The exclamation (!) character is treated as an AND NOT search operand. For example, searching for hello ! world should result with all entries that include hello but do not include world.

Browse Media

Follow these steps to browse for media within MediaSpace.

Shared Media

  • Browse for shared media by clicking on the Faculty Collections link at the top of the page. Sort your content view by clicking on the sort content drop down menu underneath the Channels tab. Choose from the following choices: Most Recent, Alphabetical or Members. As you scroll down the page more results will load automatically.

Private Media

  • By default media uploaded to MediaSpace is private. Browse your My Media area to view or upload your own content . Sort your content view by clicking on the sort content drop down menus underneath the My Media heading. Choose from the following choices: Most Recent, Alphabetical, Members, Media Status or Media Type.
Blackboard users can browse their My Media from within Blackboard by selecting the Faculty tab > click the Media sub-tab > click on the Manage My Media link from the Chemeketa Learning Cloud module.

Media Upload

Follow these steps to upload media to MediaSpace or within Blackboard.

  1. Access MediaSpace at: video.chemeketa.edu
  2. From the top right corner, click Add New > Media Upload (enter your My Chemeketa login if prompted).

    Blackboard users can Upload Media directly from within Blackboard by selecting following these steps:

    1. Login to Blackboard at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
    2. Enter your My Chemeketa login when prompted.
    3. From within a Blackboard course with Edit Mode On click on the Build Content Button > click Kaltura Media.
    4. Next from the Mashup Gallery page > click the Add New > Media Upload.
  3. Next from the Media Upload page, click Choose a File to Upload.
  4. Browse and select media files on your computer to upload.
  5. Click the Ok button.
  6. Enter information for required fields about your media (indicated by an asterisk).
  7. Click the Save link to save your changes.

Webcam Recording

Follow these steps to record yourself using a computer webcam.

  1. Access MediaSpace at: video.chemeketa.edu
  2. From the top right corner click Add New > Webcam Recording

    Blackboard users can access the Webcam Recorder from within Blackboard by selecting following these steps:

    1. Login to Blackboard at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
    2. Enter your My Chemeketa login when prompted.
    3. From within a Blackboard course with Edit Mode On click on the Build Content Button > click Kaltura Media.
    4. Next from the Mashup Gallery page > click the Add New > Webcam Recording.
  3. Next from the Record from Webcam page > click the Allow button to activate your web camera.
  4. Click on the Record button on the video to begin recording.
  5. Click on the Stop button on the video to end recording.
  6. Click on the Save button on the video to save your recording.

Record Media with CaptureSpace

The CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder from Kaltura is an easy to use tool for recording instructional media. CaptureSpace Lite offers the following options:

  • Capture your Screen, Webcam, and Audio
  • Capture your Screen and Audio
  • Capture Webcam and Audio
  • Capture Audio Only

Once you record media with CaptureSpace you can easily edit your recordings and upload them to Kaltura.

Once uploaded faculty can Add Media to Blackboard or share links to media.

CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder

Download and Install Software

Follow these steps to download the CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder.

  • Access MediaSpace at: video.chemeketa.edu
  • From the top of the page, click on the My Media link.
  • Your media will be listed on the My Media page.
  • Click on the Add New button in the top right corner of the page.
  • Select Record Media from the list.
  • From the CaptureSpace page click on a link to download the software for Windows PC or Mac OSX.
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
  • From within Blackboard, click on the Faculty tab at the top of the page > click the Media sub-tab below > click on Kaltura My Media link from the Audio Video Repository module.
  • Your media will be listed on the My Media page.
  • Click on the Add New button in the top right corner of the page.
  • Select Record Media from the list.
  • From the CaptureSpace page click on a link to download the software for Windows PC or Mac OSX.
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Start a Recording

The first launch of the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder must be done from the web.

  • From the MediaSpace site click on the Add New button in the top right corner.
  • Select Record Media from the list.
  • Click on the Launch Application button.
  • The CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder will launch.
  • Choose to record your Screen, Screen & Webcam, Webcam or Voice.
  • From within a Blackboard course with Edit Mode on click on the Build Content button > click Kaltura Media.
  • Click on the Add New button in the top right corner.
  • Select Record Media from the list.
  • Click on the Launch Application button.
  • The CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder will launch.
  • Choose to record your Screen, Screen & Webcam, Webcam or Voice.

After you have launched the recorder from the web for the first time you can then launch the record from your desktop.

  • From your Desktop or Start Menu, click on the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder icon.

Recording Options

Follow these steps to download the CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder.

  1. Click on Screen in the Record tab.
  2. Select whether to record the entire screen or only a selected area. If you'd like to record the entire screen select Full screen. If you'd like to record a specific area of the screen, click on Select Area. To select an area – drag your mouse over the area you want to capture and release.
  3. When ready, click on Record to start the recording.
  4. Drawing tools are available when recording the screen. The drawing tools can be used to draw freely on the screen during the recording. You can stress important points by drawing a circle around them, or highlight important aspects. Anytime during a recording, you can click on Draw to use the drawing tools.
  5. Click Done when finished recording.
  1. Click on Screen & Webcam in the Record tab.
  2. Select whether to record the entire screen or only a selected area. If you'd like to record the entire screen select Full screen. If you'd like to record  a specific area of the screen, click on Select Area. To select an area – drag your mouse over the area you want to capture and release.
  3. When ready, click on Record to start the recording.

  5. Click Done when finished recording.
  1. Click on Webcam  in the Record tab.
  2. You are presented with a preview for about 5 seconds. The recording then starts.
  3. Click Done when finished recording.
  1. Click on Voice  in the Record tab. You will see a countdown before the recording begins.
  2. Control the recording using the recording player.
  3. Click Done when finished.

Edit a Recording

Once you finish a recording the Preview and Edit window will appear. From here you can perform the following editing features:

This option allows you to trim the beginning and ending of a recording.

To trim a recording:

  1. In the Library tab, select the recording you would like to edit.
  2. Click on the Preview Media icon and then click on the Preview button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Trim from the menu on the left. Two blue markers are displayed on the video strip.
  4. Use the Start and End markers to highlight the part of the recording you want to retain. The region to the left and right of the markers is greyed out. Trimming is only possible if the resulting recording is longer than 10 seconds.
  5. Click Apply and then click Done.

All edits made to the recording are made to the original file.

This option allows you to chop parts of the recording.

To chop a recording:

  1. In the Library tab, select the recording you would like to edit.
  2. Click on the Preview Media icon and then click on the Preview button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Chop from the menu on the left. Two blue markers are displayed on the video strip.
  4. Use the Start and End markers to highlight the part of the recording you want to retain. The region to the left and right of the markers are greyed out. Chopping is only possible if the resulting recording is longer than 10 seconds.
  5. Click Apply and then click Done.

All edits made to the recording will be made to the original file.

To add a title to a video

  1. In the Library tab, select the recording you would like to edit.
  2. Click on the Preview Media icon and then click on Preview at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Add Title from the menu on the left. You can edit the text on the titles. You can also add multiple titles to a video.
  4. Click Apply and then click Done.

All edits made to the recording are made to the original file.

Adding a title is NOT supported on Windows 8.1 or on recordings of Lectures & Presentations using a presentation.

To add credits to a video

  1. In the Library tab, select the recording you would like to edit.
  2. Click on the Preview Media icon and then click on Preview at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Add Credits from the menu on the left. You can edit the text on the credits. You can also add multiple credits to a video.
  4. Click Apply and then click Done.

All edits made to the recording are made to the original file.

Adding credits is NOT supported on Windows 8.1 or on recordings of Lectures & Presentations using a presentation.

Upload a Recording

You can upload media immediately after recording or by clicking on the Library Tab to upload previous recordings.

  • From the Edit and Preview window click the Done button.
  • Enter a Title, Description and Tags for your media and click Save.
  • Click on Upload to begin uploading. Click the Save button to save the recording to the Library tab and upload at a later time.

After the video finishes uploading, a notification with a link to the recording is displayed.

Note:It may take several minutes for the media to appear on your My Media page.
  • Launch the CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder
  • Select the Library tab.
  • Select the recording you would like to upload and click Upload now.
  • Enter a Title, Description and Tags for your media and click Save.
  • Click on Upload to begin uploading.

Add Media to Blackboard / eLearn

Once you upload media to Kaltura you can then add media to a Blackboard course as a standalone content item (Kaltura Media mashup).

Follow these steps to add media to a Blackboard course.

  1. Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
  2. Enter your My Chemeketa login when prompted
  3. Select a course from the course list.
  4. Navigate to the course area where you want to add your video.
  5. With Edit Mode On, click on the Build Content button > click Kaltura Media.
  6. Next from the Mashup Gallery page > click the Select button for the media you want to add to your course area.
  7. Enter a required Title and optional Description.
  8. Click the Submit button.

Publish Media to Channels

Faculty can publish media to Channels to share media with to specific users and groups. Channels are only avaialble in MediaSpace. See What is a Channel to learn more.

  1. Access MediaSpace at: video.chemeketa.edu
  2. From the top right corner, click on the User Menu > then click on My Media
  3. Next click on a media thumbnail or title from the My Media list.
  4. Click the Actions button then select Publish from the menu.
    Note: you must complete all required metadata fields before publishing to Channels. If prompted edit the details of the entry before publishing to channels.
  5. Check the boxes to select one or more channels to publish your media to.
    Your media will be added to those channels. To unpublish your media repeat these steps above and uncheck the boxes to remove the media from the channel.

Link to Media

You can share links to media from MediaSpace. Links to media are not available from Blackboard.

  1. Access MediaSpace at: video.chemeketa.edu > click on the My Media link from the top of the page.
  2. From the My Media page click on a media thumbnail or title from the list.
  3. From the media viewing page click the Share button under the media player.
  4. Copy the link to share with others.
Note: you must Publish your media as Unlisted or to a Channel before you can share media with others. See Media Privacy Settings for more information on media publishing options. See Channel Privacy Settings for more information on channel media.

Publish Media Before Sharing

  1. Click the Actions button.
  2. Select Publish from the menu.
  3. Select Unlisted. Your media will be visible to anyone with a link to the page.

Copy HTML Embed Code

You can embed media within your eLearn / Blackboard course. Follow these stpes to copy HTML embed code from media within MediaSpace. See further instructions below to paste HTML embed code into your eLearn course, faculty website or blog.

  1. From your My Media page in MediaSpace click on a media thumbnail or title from the list.
  2. Click the Share button under the media player.
  3. Click on the Embed link.
  4. Select a Player Skin (Dark, Light or Hover Controls).
  5. Select a Player Size (Large, Medium or Small).
  6. Copy the HTML embed code and paste the code into your eLearn course, faculty website or blog.

Media Privacy Settings

By default all media uploaded to Kaltura is private. In MediaSpace you must publish your media as Unlisted or to a Channel before others can view it. Access media from your My Media page.

Control your media privacy settings by following these instructions below:

  1. From your My Media page in MediaSpace click on a media thumbnail or title from the list.
  2. Next click the thumbnail or title of the published media that you want to make private.
  3. Click the Actions button then select Publish from the menu.

    Media Publishing Options:

    1. Private: Media uploaded to MediaSpace is private by default and only accessible to the owner.
    2. Unlisted: Media visible to anyone with link to page.
    3. Published: Media will be visible within the MediaSpace Channels area.

    You must be logged into MediaSpace to access Channels. Media within Private Channels will only be visible to invited members.

  4. Click the Save button.
  5. Click the OK button to confirm your changes.
    A confirmation message will display underneath the media.

Edit Media Details

Follow these steps to edit media information such as title, description, author, tags and more.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to edit in the list.
  2. From the Edit Media page > Enter text information into the required fields.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save button to save your changes.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to download.
  2. Click the Download Media button from the video player control bar. The video file will begin downloading to your computer.

Delete Media

Follow these steps to delete media from Kaltura Media.

CAUTION: deleting media from within MediaSpace or Blackboard will permanently remove that media. Keep copies of your original videos before deleting video in Kaltura.
  1. From your My Media page > click the Delete button for the media entry you want to delete in the list.
  2. Click the Delete button once again from the confirmation message.

TIP: To delete multiple entries at once, check the boxes next to the entries, click the Actions button and select Delete.

Manage Comments

Viewers can comment on media entries within MediaSpace. Follow these steps to enable/disable comments for your media.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to edit in the list.
  2. From the Edit Media page > click the Options tab and select the Disable comments for this media checkbox. The Comments tab will then not be displayed on the media page. To enable comments leave the box unchecked.
Note: Comments that were entered before you disable the comment feature are re-displayed if you re-enable comments. To prevent additional comments on a media item select the Close Discussion checkbox. On the Comments tab of the media page, Comments closed is displayed and the Add a Comment field is not displayed.

Upload Captions

Follow these steps to upload caption files for your media items and manage the captions.

Note: you can only upload captions to video entries.
  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to add captions to.
  2. From the Edit Media page > click on the Captions tab. Click Upload Captions File button.
  3. Click the Browse button and select an SRT or DFXP caption file from your computer.
  4. Select the caption language.
  5. Enter a label to display for the captions (ex: English).
  6. Click Save to upload the file.

View Captions

  • Click on the CC button in the video player control bar underneath the video. Select an available caption track.
  • Captions will display by default if the media owner has enabled this setting.

Thumbnail Image

Follow these steps to change the media thumbnail image.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to add a thumbanil image to.
  2. In the Edit Media page > click the Thumbnails tab.
  3. Click on Upload, Capture or Auto-Generate to set the default thumbnail.

Thumbnail Options

By using Upload, Capture or Auto-Generate you will set the default thumbnail as the selected one. If you need to backup your current thumbnail, you can Download it.

  • Upload: upload a thumbnail from your desktop and use it as the default thumbnail.
  • Capture: use the above player to to seek the frame you would like to use as your default thumbnail and then click on the Capture button.
  • Auto-Generate: select one thumbnail from ten automatically generated thumbnails of this video and set it as the default thumbnail.

Attachments

You can attach files of any type to media, enabling viewers to download the file while viewing the media entry.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to add attachements to.
  2. In the Edit Media page > click the Attachments tab. Here you can view all the file attachments for the media entry.
  3. Click the Upload File button to attach a file to the media entry.
  4. The Upload Attachment dialog will appear.
  5. Browse your computer to select a file.
  6. Add a Title andDescription for the attached file.
  7. Click the Save button.

Repeat these steps to attach additional files.

Chapters & Slides

Students can navigate through your videos using slides and chapters. After chapters and slides are created, the video player displays with the chapters and slides view options.

  • Chapter: marker in the video that is used to provide context to a segment of the media.
  • Slide: a synchronized image to the main video.

Follow these steps to add Chapters and Slides to your videos.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to add chapters or slides to.
  2. Select the Timeline tab. Here you can view all the chapters and slides in the video.
    • Create Chapter: place the cursor on the timeline and click the Create Chapter button.
    • Create Slide: place the cursor on the timeline and click the Create Slide button.
  3. Click the Save button when finished.

Chapter Options:

After you create a chapter, you can:

  • Add or modify or delete the Chapter Title.
  • Select a thumbnail. You can upload a thumbnail image for the chapter, or automatically create one from the video.
  • Add or modify the Chapter Description (optional).
  • Add Search Tags (optional).
  • Click View in Player to see your changes.

Replace Video

Use Replace Video from the Edit Media page to replace video and preserve links and analytics to the video. Replacing Video is only available to the video owner.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to replace.
  2. In the Edit Media page > click the Replace Video tab.
  3. Next click Choose a File to Upload.
  4. Browse and select media files on your computer to upload.
  5. Click the Ok button.
CAUTION: Replace Video will replace the source video permanently. Keep copies of your original videos before replacing video in Kaltura.

Trim or Clip Video

Use the trimming tool accessible from the Edit Media page to trim the start and/or end of your video. Trimming is only available to the video owner.

  1. From your My Media page > click the Edit button for the media entry you want to Trim or Clip.
  2. From the Edit Media page > click the Trim Video tab.
  3. Use the Trimming Timeline or enter exact start and end times.
    TIP:
    Drag the edges of the start and end points with your mouse to set the trim range or enter a start time and end time in the time fields.
  4. Press Play and click Set Starting Point of the video clip.
  5. Select Set Ending Point as the end point of the video clip.
  6. Click Trim Video orCreate Clip.
CAUTION: Trim Video will modify the source video permanently. Use Create Clip to trim a copy and preserve the original movie in Kaltura.

A Channel is simply a collection of users and media. Within MediaSpace users can create channels, add/remove media to channels, control channel privacy, add other users to channels and manage their permissions. Channels are not available from Blackboard.

Channel Users & Permissions

Add members to channels and manage their permissions.

User Permissions

Below are the permission levels available for a channel owner to assign to members.

  • Member: View channel content only.
  • Contributor: View channel content and add media to the channel.
  • Moderator: View channel content, add media to the channel, and moderate channel content.
  • Manager: View channel content, add media to the channel, moderate channel content, and manage the channel (delegate managerial rights to additional users).

Add Members to a Channel

Note: Adding members applies only to channels that are restricted or public.
  1. From MediaSpace click the User Menu > select My Channels and then click on a channel.
  2. Select Actions > Edit.
    If you are the channel manager or owner, you are able to add members to the channel.
  3. Click on the Members tab
  4. Click Add Member.
    • In the Add Member window under
    • Enter user name, start typing a user name to display user names, and select a member to add.
    • under Set permission, select the member's permission.
    • click Add to add the selected member with the specified permission.

To modify a channel member's permission

  1. On the My Channels page, click Edit.
  2. On the Members tab, click on the Pencil icon to edit the member's permission level.
  3. A drop down appears > Select a permission level from the list.
  4. ck the Save icon to apply the modified permission to the member.

Channel Privacy Settings

Control who gets to view content and participate with your channels.

  • Open: Membership is open and non-members can view content and participate.
  • Restricted: Non-members can view content, but users must be invited to participate
  • Private: Membership is by invitation only and only members can view content and participate.

Create a Channel

  1. From MediaSpace click on the User Menu > then click on My Channels.
  2. On the My Channels page > click Create Channel.
  3. The Create a New Channel page is displayed.
  4. On the Create New Channel page enter values for:
    • Name: Enter the channel name to display on the Channels page.
    • Description: Enter a summary of the channel content to display on the My Channels page.
    • Tags: Enter a descriptive tag to use in searches.
  5. Select the channel Privacy Settings.
    • Open: Membership is open and non-members can view content and participate.
    • Restricted: Non-members can view content, but users must be invited to participate
    • Private: Membership is by invitation only and only members can view content and participate.
  6. (Optional) Select the options settings for the channel.
    • Moderate content (Media will not appear in channel until approved by channel manager.)
    • Enable comments in channels.
    • Enable subscription to channel
  7. Click the Save button.

Manage Channel Media

In the Add Media to a Channel page you can add existing media or upload new content to the channel.

  1. From MediaSpace click on the User Menu > select My Channels.
  2. Click on the Channel that you want to add content to.
  3. Click on the Add Media button.
  4. Select the content you want to add to the channel and click Publish.

To add new media

Follow the instructions for Uploading Media.

Delete media from a channel

  1. From MediaSpace click on the User Menu > select My Channels.
  2. Click on the Channel that you want to delete content from.
  3. Select the content you want to delete and click Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

Moderating Channel Content

Channel managers and moderators approve or reject content when a channel manager's approval is required before media is displayed.

To moderate channel content

  1. On the Channels icon, click on Edit.
  2. In the Edit channel name page options section, select Moderate.
  3. Click Save.The channel is now moderated. If content is uploaded to the channel the status will be pending approval.
Note: If media is waiting for moderation, you cannot preview or publish it until it is approved. You can edit media information while waiting for moderation.

To approve content that is pending

  1. Go the My Channels page.
  2. Click on the pending link on a channel that has media pending or on the Channel page click Browse Pending. The browser pending media window is displayed.
  3. Click Approve or Reject. Approved content is displayed on the channel page. Rejected content will not be added to the channel.

Delete a Channel

  1. On the My Channels page, click on Edit.
  2. From the Edit Channel page click Delete.
  3. Click Delete to confirm the deletion.
Note: Deleting a channel does not delete the media from MediaSpace.

Create a Playlist

In MediaSpace you can create playlists and associate media with the playlists.

  1. Browse to the media that you would like to add to a playlist.
  2. Select the "Add to Playlist" option under the Actions dropdown.
  3. The My Media page is displayed.
  4. Enter a Name and click Create.

After you create a playlist, it appears on the My Playlists page where you can preview it, edit the sequence of media, select design of playlist, and grab the embed code.

Note: You cannot add video presentations to playlists.

Add Media to Playlists

  1. Browse to the media that you would like to add to a playlist.
  2. Select Add to Playlists from the Actions dropdown.
  3. Check the playlists you want to add the media to or create a new playlist and click Save.
  4. The media is added to the new playlist.
  5. Click Go to My Playlists to preview the content, edit the sequence of media, select design of playlist, and grab the embed code.

Remove Media from a Playlist

  1. Click the media thumbnail or title that you want to remove from a playlist.
  2. Select Add to Playlists from the Actions drop down menu.
  3. Uncheck the playlist that you want to remove media from.
  4. Click Save.

Manage Playlists

After you create a playlist, you can preview the playlist, reorder the media in the playlist, design the playlist, and copy the playlist’s embed code.
  1. Select My Playlists from the User menu.
  2. Select the playlist name to view all the content in the playlist.

    For the selected playlist, you can do the following:
    • Delete the playlist.
    • Drag and drop the content to reorder the videos in the playlist.
    • Remove videos from the playlist.
    • Copy the playlist's embed code to paste it on a web site.
    • Share the playlist via email.
    • Select the layout and color of the playlist.
    • Add entries to playlists.

Add Media to a Blackboard Course Area

Faculty can add media to their Blackboard course as a standalone content item (Kaltura Media Mashup).

Follow these steps to add media to a Blackboard course.

  1. Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
  2. Enter My Chemeketa login when prompted
  3. Select a course from the course list.
  4. Navigate to the course area where you want to add your video.
  5. With Edit Mode On, click on the Build Content button > click Kaltura Media.
  6. Next from the Mashup Gallery page > click the Select button for the media you want to add to your course area.
    • To upload new media the Add New button.
    • From the Media Upload page, click Choose a File to Upload.
    • Browse and select media files on your computer to upload.
    • Click the Ok button.
  7. Enter a required Title and optional Description.
  8. Click the Submit button.

Add Media from Blackboard Content Editor

  1. Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu (enter My Chemeketa login when prompted)
  2. Select a course from the course list.
  3. Navigate to the course area where you want to add your video.
  4. With Edit Mode On, click on the Build Content button > click Kaltura Media.
  5. In the Blackboard Content Editor Toolbar click the Mashups button and choose Kaltura Media.The Kaltura Browse, Search and Embed dialog is displayed. The Browse, Search and Embed window allows you to upload and create new content on the fly. You can reuse existing content from My Media, a Media Gallery and from the Shared Repository.
  6. Click Add New to add new media, or browse/search for the media you want to embed.
  7. To embed a video, click the Select button next to the video to embed. You can use the dropdown menu to select a different size for the player.
  8. The Embedded Media will appear inside the text item, along with related metadata.

Paste HTML Embed Code in eLearn

You can embed media within your eLearn / Blackboard course. Follow these steps to paste HTML embed code directly within your eLearn / Blackboard course:

  1. Copy the HTML embed code from Youtube, MediaSpace or other internet video streaming service.
    View instructions for How to copy HTML embed code from your media within MediaSpace.
  2. Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
  3. Select a course from the course list.
  4. Navigate to the course area where you want to add your video.
  5. With Edit Mode On > click Build Content button > select Item or Blank Page.
  6. Enter a Title.
  7. In the Content Editor Toolbar > click on the HTML button (expand toolbar to see all three rows).
  8. Paste your HTML embed code into the HTML popup window > click Update button.
  9. Click Submit button.

Your media has now been added to your course area.

Course Media Galleries

By default, users assigned with a Teacher role in a Blackboard Learn course can manage the course Media Gallery. As the manager, you can perform actions that other users enrolled to the course (like students) cannot.

These actions include:

  • Configuring settings like the description of the Media Gallery
  • Moderating the content added to the Media Gallery
  • Removing content from the Media Gallery
  • Accessing the Media Gallery Analytics page

All users enrolled to the course can:

  • View approved content
  • Browse and search the Media Gallery
  • Add Media (pending the teacher’s moderation)
  • Remove media they have added

Create a Course Media Gallery link

Create a Course Media Gallery link in your course by adding a Tool Link to the Course Menu.

  1. Access eLearn at: elearn.chemeketa.edu
  2. Select a course from the course list.
  3. With Edit Mode On > click + button over the Course Menu
    • Select Tool Link > select Type Media Gallery.
    • Enter a Name for the Tool Link.
    • Check the box Available to Users so students can access the link.
  4. Now click on the new link to access the Course Media Gallery.

Edit a Course Media Gallery

Note: Editing a course media gallery is only available to Course Managers.
  1. In the Media Gallery, select Edit from the Actions drop down menu.
  2. (Optional) Enter a description and tags for the Media Gallery for the course.
  3. Select:
    • Moderate content (Media will not appear in the Media Gallery until approved by the faculty.) Allows you to determine whether content should be moderated. If moderation is disabled, everyone, including students, can publish content to the gallery.
    • Enable comments in Media Gallery – Determines whether comments should be enabled in the gallery.
  4. Click Save.

Add Media to a Course Media Gallery

You can add media or upload new content from your desktop.

  1. Select Add Media button. Filter your content.
  2. Select one or more of the following filtering options:
    • Sort by Most Recent – Alphabetical, Comments
    • View All Statuses – Private, Published, Pending, Rejected
    • View All Media – Videos, Audios or Images, Video Presentations
  3. Check the box(es) next to the media you want to add to the Media Gallery.
  4. Click Publish. The content will be added to the Media Gallery

Moderating Content in a Course Media Gallery

Teachers and Teaching Assistants may approve or reject content from the Media Gallery.

To approve and reject content that is pending moderation

  1. In the Media Gallery, click on Browse Pending.
  2. Click on the thumbnail to view the media.
  3. Click Approve or Reject for a specific media item or check multiple media items and click Approve or Reject on the top (View All media) for bulk approving or rejecting.
Note: Approved content is displayed in the Media Gallery for all users enrolled to the course.

Viewing Media Gallery Analytics

Teachers can access the Media Gallery Analytics page to view different engagement reports for students enrolled in a course.

  1. In the Media Gallery, click Actions and then Analytics.
  2. The Dashboard presents a summary of the available analytics.
    • Top Engaged Users – who are the users who viewed most content
    • Top Contributors – who are the users who contributed most content

Media Analytics Reports in Blackboard

The analytics page is composed of the following types of video analytics reports:

  • Media Analytics Report: Lists all the content available in the course Media Gallery. For each media entry, the number of plays is displayed, total view time, average view time and the average drop-off rate.
  • Engagement Analytics Report: Lists all the users enrolled to the course that have viewed at least one video from the Media Gallery. For each user, the total view time, average view time and average drop offrate are presented.
  • Contribution Analytics Report: Lists all the users that contributed content to the Media Gallery.

View Analytics Reports

  1. From the Media Gallery select Actions and then select Analytics.
  2. In the Analytics page, select the desired report by clicking its corresponding tab.

View a Detailed Entry Report

You can access a detailed report for each entry in a Media, Engagement or Contribution report. See Detailed Analytics Reports.

  1. From the Media Gallery Analytics page, select the desired report by clicking its corresponding tab.
  2. Click on the + Plus Symbol next to the entry. The detailed entry analytics reports will depend on the type of report you selected.
    • Media Detailed Entry Report: Displays the list of all the users that viewed the selected media entry.
    • Engagement Detailed Entry Report: Displays the list of all the media entries viewed by the selected user.
    • Contribution Detailed Entry Report: Lists all media contributed by the selected user.
